Ahly, Zamalek fans to attend Africa matches despite security concerns Three thousand supporters will be allowed to attend this weekend's CAF Champions League matches in Gouna, Egyptian Football Association confirms
In a surprise move, Ahly and Zamalek fans will be allowed to attend this weekend's CAF Champions League matches, despite security concerns. Ahly is to host Congo's AC Leopards on Saturday, one day before Zamalek host South Africa's Orlando Pirates in the fourth round of the group stage of the tournament. "Security authorities have approved a maximum of 3,000 spectators to be allowed to attend the matches," Egyptian Football Association (EFA) spokesman Azmy Megahed confirmed to Ahram Online on Wednesday. Due to the security situation, the two matches will be held in the Red Sea resort of Gouna, Hurghada, 430km away from Cairo, in a stadium without floodlights. In addition to concerns over fans' attendance at matches since the death of over 70 spectators at the Port Said stadium in February 2012, the security situation in Egypt is unstable, particularly since the military ousted elected president Mohamed Morsi following mass protests against him. Even before the interior ministry's green light, the hardcore fan groups of Ahly, Ultras Ahlawy, and Zamalek, Ultras White Knights, seemed determined to attend the matches. They had already planned their trips to Gouna to support their teams. Like the Leopards, Ahly have four points from a possible nine, after the Egyptians drew with rivals Zamalek with one goal each and were defeated by South Africa's Orlando Pirates, who lead Group A with seven points. Egypt have moved the national team's match, against Guinea in World Cup qualifiers on 10 September, to Borg El-Arab stadium but fans are banned.
