Two killed in fresh militant attack in Sinai Two security personnel were killed, four injured in militant attack on security checkpoint in North Sinai on Thursday
Two security personnel were killed and four wounded in the latest in a series of attacks on security checkpoints in North Sinai late Thursday afternoon. The Sinai Peninsula, near Egypt's borders with Israel and the Palestinian Gaza strip, has seen a spike in violence since the army's overthrow of the country's Islamist leader Mohamed Morsi early this month. Those killed include a police officer and an army conscript. Unknown gunmen in a double cabin car exchanged gunfire with security forces at a checkpoint in the North Sinai town of Sheikh Zuweid, eyewitnesses told Ahram Arabic news website. The armed assailant stormed the checkpoint, opened fire on the international road connecting the towns of Arish, Sheikh Zuweid and Rafah, and fled the scene, Ahram added. Since Morsi's ouster, hardline Islamist militants in the deserted province have intensified attacks on security checkpoints, already having exploited the political and security vacuum left after the ouster of long time autocrat Hosni Mubarak in 2011. Dozens have been killed and around a hundred injured in drive-by shootings and rocket attacks since then. According to security sources, the army has killed tens of alleged jihadi fighters since launching its latest crackdown in Sinai. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/77384.aspx
