Flamenco film week, aFlamencá, at the French Cultural Centre in Alexandria
A Spanish and French flamenco film festival will be held in Alexandria, Egypt starting Monday 14 March until Thursday 17 March
Published in Ahram Online on 14 - 03 - 2011

The word aflamencá comes from a creative mix of the words aflam (films in Arabic) and aflamencada, which means with a touch of flamenco.
This week at the French Cultural Centrein Alexandria, Egypt will show, in conjunction with Cervantes, the Spanish Institute, four flamenco movies that celebrate the Spanish and French languages, and, of course, flamenco.
Every day at 7 pm there is a short rhythm workshop (LE5 charge) that introduces the flamenco 4, 6 and 12-beat rhythms.
The festival culminates on Thursday with a short film and a performance by up-and-coming Fuego, a group that plays Gipsy Kings covers.
Monday, March 14 at 9 pm: Exiles, a French film by Tony Gatlif, which won a prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2004 (subtitles in English). This is about a young, French-Algerian couple who are seeking their roots. A journey by land is the only option, considering their limited means. Along the way they pass through enigmatic Spain and watch a flamenco performance in a well-known local bar.
Tuesday, March 15 at 8 pm: Camarón, a Spanish film (subtitles in English). This movie does justice to the famous figure, who gave new life to flamenco in the 1970s and 80s. To this day he is hailed as the best flamenco singer, bar none.
Wednesday, March 16 at 8 pm: Vengo, a French film by Tony Gatlif (subtitles in French). This film opens with a scene where Sheikh El Tunisi and famous Spanish guitarist, Tomatito, play a rare mix in a mysterious hillside villa in Andalucía. From then, the music is interwoven through the life of a gipsy boss who is mourning the loss of his daughter.
Thursday, March 17 at 8 pm: Los Almendros, a short Spanish film that highlights local, raw flamenco in a unique manner,
