Ahly-Zamalek Champions League clash to take place in Alexandria Cairo rivals Ahly and Zamalek to face off in Alexandria in their first Group A match of the African Champions League
Zamalek will host Cairo rivals Ahly in Alexandria in their first African Champions League group-stage clash despite security concerns, Ahram Sport reported on Wednesday. There had been speculation over whether the game would take place in Egypt, given the ongoing political turmoil that followed the Egyptian army's overthrow of President Mohamed Morsi last week. The Egyptian Premier League was suspended for an indefinite period amid reports that the competition might be called off. Ahram Sport said the Egyptian Football Association had informed the Confederation of African Football (CAF) that the Ahly vs Zamalek clash would be played at Borg El-Arab, an army-owned stadium, in Alexandria on 21 July. The match is likely to be played behind closed doors. Ahly are eyeing a second successive Champions League triumph while success-starved Zamalek are chasing their first continental title since 2002.
