Egypt football fans barred from matches after disturbances All club games will be played behind closed doors after Egypt's sports ministry imposes indefinite spectator ban in wake of recent crowd disturbances
Egyptian football fans will not be able to watch their favourite clubs from the stands after the sports ministry on Tuesday imposed an indefinite crowd ban. Games played by Egypt's national team will be the only exception. "Because of incidents at recent football games involving Zamalek, Ahly and Ismaily, which put the safety of fans at risk and damaged public property, the ministry has decided to ban fans from attending domestic, Arab or African matches for these clubs," the ministry stated. It added that the measure had been taken "for the sake of fans' safety and to protect sports facilities [from possible damage]." Spectators had already been banned from attending domestic matches since the infamous Port Said stadium disaster, which left over 70 Ahly fans dead following an ill-tempered league game against Masry early last year. Limited numbers of fans had previously been allowed to attend continental encounters, but recent disturbances at Champions League matches played by Cairo duo Ahly and Zamalek and a regional game featuring Ismaily prompted the ministry to reconsider. Zamalek fans ripped up the seats at Alexandria's military-owned Borg El-Arab Stadium following a preliminary round game against Chad's Gazelle. And their Ahly counterparts threw firecrackers onto the pitch during the team's recent 2-0 victory over Kenya's Tusker in the second leg of the competition's round of 32. During Ismaily's Arab Cup game against Algeria's USMA, meanwhile, some home supporters invaded the pitch following the final whistle and fought with police. "The Egyptian Football Association is entitled to take the necessary measures to implement the decision immediately," the sports ministry asserted. "It will take responsibility for any violations in this regard." (For more sports news and updates, follow Ahram Online Sports on Twitter at@AO Sportsand on Facebook atAhramOnlineSports)
