Egypt court to hear prosecutor-general's appeal in July Former prosecutor-general Abdel-Maguid Mahmoud wants presidential decree that dismissed him declared null and void
An appeal court will begin looking into issues surrounding the dismissal of former prosecutor-general Abdel-Maguid Mahmoud on 21 July. An appeal court, headed by Thanaa Khalil, withdrew from the case earlieron Sunday citing"unease."A new court under Judge Farag Zaher was put in place. On27 Marcha court rulingreversed President Morsi's decision to dismiss Mahmoud from his post. The ruling was never implemented, however. Mahmoud appealed the verdict because it failed to describe the president's constitutional decree – which contained his dismissal – as null and void. Mahmoud was dismissed in November 2012 and Talaat Abdullah was appointed to replace him. The decision sparked uproar among the opposition and the judiciary. Many opposition groups took to the streets to demand the dismissal of Abdullah. Under Egyptian law, the prosecutor-general can only be dismissed by a judicial decree, not by the president.
