Minister moves towards an independent judiciary in Egypt New Egyptian minister of justice accepts to move the responsibility of evaluation of judges to a more independent body, supreme judicial council
Egyptian Minister of Justice Abdel Aziz El-Gendy accepts the transfer of the judicial inspection department under the independent supreme judicial council. Judges were traditionally monitored by the ministry of justice, which is deemed to be political and, therefore, biased. The supreme judicial council, however, is seen as an independent body capable of checking the judiciary. El-Gendy's acceptance was confirmed today by the head of the Judges Association, Ahmed El-Zend after they had a phone conversation. He added that El-Gendy assured him that he will work to support the independence of the Egyptian judiciary. The high board of all the provincial judges and board of the Judges Association are expected to congratulate the minister on his recent appointment at a meeting scheduled for Thursday.
