Egyptian conductor to perform in Mexico Egyptian conductor Hisham Gabr will give two concerts in Mexico with a programme including works by Mozart, Nielsen and Russian composers
Egyptian conductor and composer Hisham Gabr is heading to Mexico to conduct the Mexican state symphony orchestra during concerts on 10 and 12 May. The trip represents a culmination of Gabr's international artistic commitments this season, during which he conducted European orchestras including Wroclaw Philharmonic Orchestra (Poland) and the Macedonian Philharmonic Orchestra. This was topped by a number of concerts given in Egypt, which included ballet and opera. In his statement to Ahram Arabic, Gabr said that he is looking forward to his collaboration with the Mexican orchestra, adding that this is one of the most important orchestras in central and southern America, and the experience will allow him to get closer to a different culture and different audiences. The programme of the two concerts is both unique and versatile. Works by Mozart, Carl Nielsen, and two important Russian composers, Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich, will be performed. Upon his return to Egypt, Gabr will give a few concerts in the country before the season ends in mid-July. He will conduct Cairo Symphony Orchestra on 18 May in Cairo and 19 May in Alexandria. This will be followed by another concert, also with the Cairo Symphony, joined by internationally-renowned Egyptian pianist Ramzi Yassa on 1 June. Gabr's activities in Egypt, in this season, will be concluded by a gala concert with the Cairo Opera Orchestra on 14 and 15 June and ballet Zorba with the same orchestra between 2 and 8 July. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/70903.aspx
