National Centre for Translation boss appointed amid financial problems Professor Rasha Ismail, head of Spanish department at Cairo University, appointed new boss at Egypt's National Centre for Translation
Spanish literature professor, Rasha Ismail, was appointed the new head of Egypt's National Centre for Translation (NCT) on Monday. She replaces Camillia Sobhy, who was appointed head of the foreign cultural relations sector at the culture ministry. Rasha Ismail is the head of the Spanish department at Cairo University. Camillia Sobhy, a French literature professor, was appointed head of the NCT last year. The culture minister has not issue a statement explaining the reason for the new appointments. The NCT is a governmental body that translates books into Arabic and also publishes them. The NCT is the only official institution that pays high rates to translators. It has released around 2000 titles, ranging from literature to science. Before the Egyptian Revolution, the NCT was led by the famous critic Gaber Asfour, who helped to establish the centre and secure its funding. The NCT faces many challenges, especially financial, as it pays large sums to purchase copyrights and pay translators, but must sell its books at low prices. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/68327.aspx
