Egypt court acquits ex-PM Atef Ebeid of fraud charges in land case After appealing 2012 guilty verdict, Atef Ebeid is found innocent of charges of illegally selling state land during his tenure as Mubarak's prime minister
A Giza criminal court on Tuesday acquitted Mubarak-era prime minister Atef Ebeid of fraud charges. Ebeid was acquitted after lodging an appeal against an earlier ruling in which he was convicted of illegally selling state land. In March 2012, Ebeid, along with former agriculture minister Youssef Wali, was sentenced to ten years in prisonfor illegally selling land in a state-owned nature reserve located on Luxor's Bayadeya Island. The sale was said to have cost the public purse more than LE700 million. Earlier this month, however, Egypt's Court of Appeal overturned the verdict and ordered the ex-PM's retrial. Ebeid served as Egyptian prime minister under former president Hosni Mubarak from October 1999 to July 2004. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/63590.aspx
