Nigeria not ready for CAN 2013, says Akanni
Nigeria former winger believes that the Super Eagles are not fit for participating in the 2013 African Cup of Nations
Published in Ahram Online on 03 - 01 - 2013

Former Nigeria winger, Waidi Akanni revealed that he is worry about his country national football team when they start their 2013 African Cup of Nations campaign on 21 January as they are yet to come up with their 23-man squad for the tournament.
"Compared with other countries coming to the Nations Cup who have selected their 23-man squad it shows that we're not ready for the Afcon challenge," Akanni told Supersport on Thursday.
"We're still parading the 32-man list and not all the players have shown up. Some are being waited for and the fact that the coach is waiting to see all the players before naming his final list is cause for worry," he added.
The Super Eagles are scheduled to face Burkina Faso on 21 January in the groups stages of the 2013 African Cup of Nations, as they are in Group C alongside Zambia and Ethiopia.
"First, seeing a player and the player being certified fit for the challenge is another thing and the time for thorough examination appears not to be there,"
Most of the African countries, that will take part in the tournament, have officially announced their squad but Nigeria yet to reveal their own.
"I think others look way ahead prepared than us," Akanni said.
The 44-year-old former Nigeria winger expected that the Super Eagles under the helm of coach Stephen Keshi won't go through during the tournament's finals as they have more tough opponents.
"I think the presence of Cup holders, Zambia, Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire, South Africa, among others, make it tougher." Akanni concluded.
