Ahly's Abou-Treika hails teamwork after winning CAF award Mohamed Abou-Treika, who was named the best African-based player on Thursday, says individual awards are the result of collective work
Ahly playmaker Mohamed Abou-Treika hailed his side's teamwork after becoming the second Egyptian player to win the best African-based player award on Thursday. The classy schemer eclipsed Zambian duo Rainford Kalaba and Stoppila Sunzu in a vote by African national team coaches and technical directors to clinch the prize, which was won by Egypt skipper Ahmed Hassan in 2010. “Collective titles bring individual awards. Ahly's African Champions League triumph and the fine Club World Cup displays contributed to our individual awards,” a typically modest Abou-Treika said in a phone interview with the club's television channel. “Our teamwork is the most influential factor in helping any player wins an individual award.” Abou-Treika played a key role in leading the Red Devils to a record-extending seventh Champions League title last month following a 3-2 aggregate victory over Tunisia's Esperance. Egyptians had the lion share of the 2012 CAF awards. Ahly won the best club award and 20-year-old forward Mohamed Salah was named as the most promising player. Late coach Mahmoud El-Gohary, a cult figure in Egyptian football who died in September at the age of 74, shared the “legend award” with former Cameroon skipper Rigobert Song.
