Thursday 20 December 'Man Antom' theatre performance in French Cultural Centre at 7pm Noon Creative Enterprise brings forward the Alexandrian edition of their project 'You Can' in collaboration with the Dutch Embassy. The play is a result of a workshop between people of different disabilities to raise awareness on disability rights and social inclusion issues. The play will run on Thursday and Friday. Read our review of the Cairo project here. 30 El-Nabi Daniel Street, El-Raml Station, Alexandria 'The Nutcracker' Ballet in the Cairo Opera House at 8pm The Cairo Opera Ballet Company and the Cairo Opera Orchestra conducted by Nayer Nagui, perform the world-famous Christmas-themed ballet, which is based on the story The Nutcracker and the King of Mice by E.T.A. Hoffman. The fairytale revolves around a girl dreaming of a nutcracker prince who battles a mouse king.The ballet will also be performed on 21, 23, 24 December. Read more here. Main Hall, Cairo Opera House, Zamalek, Cairo Yehia Khalil Band in Cairo Opera House at 8pm One of the most established jazz musicians in Egypt Yehia Khalil brings his percussion beats and fellow musicians to the Opera House's Small Hall. Small Hall, Cairo Opera House, Zamalek, Cairo Sandro Schneebli & The Egyptian Connection Concert in Makan at 9pm An evening of oriental and world Jazz by Swiss composer and guitarist Sandro Schneebli joined by Ahmed Nazmi, Mohamed Medhat and Ahmed Hesham. 1 Saad Zaghloul Street, Mounira, Cairo Friday 21 December Christmas Flea Market in Designopolis at 11am The market returns with a Christmas theme ahead of the holidays. The event is ongoing all day until 7pm. KM 38 Cairo-Alex Desert Road Autumn edition of Future Shorts Film Festival in Bikya Bookstore at 7.30pm The festival is a cross-cultural initiative that will take place simultaneously in approximately 285 cities worldwide. It showcases a standardised programme of short films against a backdrop of local music and art. The event will feature a performance by Malak Makar and Safi followed by Egyptian film Cafe Regular, which was awarded a special jury mention at the Tribeca Film Festival. Also on the programme: A Brief History of John Baldessari narrated by Tom Waits, best short film nominee at BAFTA Scotland Ride, Sundance Short Filmmaking award-winner The Black Balloon and the multiple award-winning Auf Der Strecke (On the Line). El-Hadaek Street, off Road 9 (in front of McDonalds) Maadi, Cairo Badiaa Bouhrizi concert in Makan at 9pm The Tunisian singer songwriter comes to Cairo and Alexandria as part of her Middle-Eastern tour. The artist started her career experimenting with rock, jazz, reggae and trip-hop before settling on a North African beat in her current album. She will also be giving a concert on Saturday in Alexandria on the stage of El-Cabina Culture Centre. 1 Saad Zaghloul St., Mounira, Cairo Saturday 22 December December Bash Event in The District at 2pm The District, a co-working space in Maadi, joins forces with El-Raseef, Masterpeace and Mashrou' El Mareekh to bring forward this end of the year event. The program will include art therapy, origami, a drum circle, as well as live performances by Mariam Ali, Shady Ahmed, Brazilian Capoera Troupe and more. 51B Helwan El-Zerai Road, Maadi, Cairo Sufi Film Festival in Sufi Bookstore at 3pm Sufi Bookstore hosts a small scale three-day festival of the best films they screened in 2012 during their Friday screenings. Today's films include: The Tree of Life, Waltz with Bashir, Run Lola Run, and a Separation. Screenings are every two hours between 3-11pm. The festival will continue on Sunday and Monday. 12 Sayid El-Bakry Street, Zamalek, Cairo 'No Time for Art' theatre performance in Rawabet Theater at 8pm No Time for Art is an independent theatre project that showcases a series of performances directed by Laila Soliman addressing police and military violence in Egypt. The third edition presents a dialogue between a young man enrolled in mandatory military service while the nation is in turmoil and another man who is locked away in an Egyptian prison cell, falsely accused. Based on the testimonies of Ahmed El-Gendy and Sherif Hegazy, the show brings heartfelt struggles to the audience, while raising taboos of human rights violations by the military. No Time for Art has been performed in Germany, Greece, the UK, Belgium, Switzerland and Austria during the past year. The performance will be take place on Friday at the same time. Read more here. El Nabarawy St. off Champollion St. Downtown, Cairo Darwasha band live in Jesuites Theatre at 9pm The progressive rock project Darwasha mixes rock, metal and oriental sounds, creating a sound uniquely theirs. The band includes Mohamed Darwish on guitar, Ahmed El Azazi on drums, Shady El-Husseiny on melodica, Mohamed Faisal on bass, Omar Zanaty on percussion and Ahmed Omran on oud. Guest appearances for the concert will include Salam Yosry, Sherine Abdou, and Safi El-Din. Mahrany Street, behind the Coptic Hospital, El Fagala, Ramsis Sunday 23 December Sufi Film Festival in Sufi Bookstore at 3pm Sufi Bookstore hosts a small-scale three-day festival of the best films they screened in 2012 during their Friday screenings. Today's films include: The Tree of Life, Waltz with Bashir, Run Lola Run, and a Separation. Screenings are every two hours between 3-11pm. The festival will continue on Sunday and Monday. 12 Sayid El-Bakry Street, Zamalek, Cairo Al-Ahram Arts Centre and Art Gallery in Al-Ahram Building Al-Ahram organisation launches its new art centre with an inaugural exhibition entitled 'A Century of Egyptian Art'. The exhibition will display some of the art works acquired by Al-Ahram for over half a century. Many of the paintings decorate Al-Ahram corridors, as well as rooms of senior editors. The exhibition will run for three months and is open and free for the public. Read more here. Al-Ahram New Building, Galaa Street, Ground Floor, Cairo The Journey by Marwa Adel in Safarkhan Gallery In ‘The Journey', Marwa Adel rebels against the stories of traditional femininity and the glorified institution of marriage, to which girls passionately, yet blindly, aspire to from the day they are born. In her fifth solo show, the artist uses photography mixed with other mediums in mono-chromatic tones to represent the modern day woman caught in a cultural flashback.
