Egypt to receive around 12 million tourists in 2012: Minister Egypt's minister of tourism expects a 20 per cent increase in tourists visiting Egypt in 2012 than last year
The number of tourists that visited Egypt in the first 10 months of 2012 has grown 18.6 per cent over the same period last year, Minister of Tourism Hisham Zaazou said on Sunday. "Egypt has received around 9.6 million tourists between January and October 2012," Zaazou told Ahram Online. “The number of German tourists saw the largest increase at 25.8 per cent.” The tourism sector was dealt massive blows following the 2011 popular uprising that unseated former President Hosni Mubarak. The widespread security gap drove tourists away and drove the foreign currency earning industry to a near halt. "We expect the number of tourists to rise to 11.6 million this year," Zaazou added. This represents a 16 per cent growth over 2011 which saw some 10 million tourists. These levels are still well below 2010 when the industry peaked at 14 million tourists.
