Thursday 8 November Educate Me Fundraiser at 10 Mahmoud Bassiouny at 5pm Educate Me is an organisation that works to bring formal and informal education too less privileged children to inspire them to create a better future for themselves. Twenty-two children created art pieces that they will sell in the cultural space in Downtown to raise funds. 10 Mahmoud Bassiouny, 5th Floor, Downtown, Cairo Oslo, 31 August screening at El-Cabina Centre at 7pm Part of a project to bring a selection of films from the Panorama of the European Film to Alexandria by Cinematics. El-Cabina screens the Norwegian production. Read more on the film in our Panorama sectionhere. 11 San Saba Street, El-Raml Station, Downtown, Alexandria Basheer Concert in El-Geneina Theatre at 8.30pm The artist who hails from the Jaafara tribes in Upper Egypt mixes folkloric music with modern beats creating a sound that is uniquely his own. Al-Azhar Park, Salah Salem Road, Cairo 'Vivid Memory' by Wael Darwish in Safarkhan Gallery 'Vivid Memory' explores the effects on human memory and the psyche of experiencing long periods of continuous change, inconsistency and suppressed actions. The artist seeks to mirror the absence of transparency in society alongside the emerging political and social situation with deep, often suppressed, human emotion. The paintings use flat solid colours and mixed media to portray these complex feelings. 11 Brazil Street, Zamalek, Cairo Friday 9 November 'Transformers' performance by Red Tomato Group in Roman Theatre of Sohag at 3pm The street performance and clown troupe Red Tomato will host five performances from Friday to Sunday in Sohag Governate, Upper Egypt. Roman Theatre, Under Akhmeem Bridge, Sohag Mashrou El-Mareekh's Open Mic Night in Darb 1718 at 7pm El-Mareekh are back with their monthly open mic nights, giving everyone who signs up five minutes of fame to do whatever they want in front of an audience. Qasr Al-Shamee Street, Al-Fakhareen, behind the Hanging Church and Amr Mosque Trash Art Exhibition in Darb 1718 at 7pm Join the one-day exhibition at Darb 1718 which showcases the outcomes of a workshop in October called ‘Re-art Recycling Art' which encouraged people to turn household waste into works of art. Participants used a wide array of materials including plastic bottles, newspapers, magazines, old tapes, CDs, and egg cartons to create art that was both creative and eco-friendly. Qasr Al-Shamee Street, Al-Fakhareen, behind the Hanging Church and Amr Mosque Screening of 'Ten' at Sufi Bookstore at 7pm The 2002 production revolves around ten conversations taking place in Iran between a female driver, her son, a prostitute and other characters painting several portraits of unheard Iranian voices. 12 Sayed El-Bakry Street, Zamalek, Cairo Saturday 10 November Baheya Band in El-Raseef's Space at 7pm Baheya Band got together during the Cabinet sit-in in December where they were singing revolutionary songs by Sheikh Imam and Sayed Darwish. El-Raseef group, who run a publication and cultural activities, will be hosting them in their space for a concert along with introducing their next trip to Aswan. Street 151, off Horeya Square, Maadi, Cairo Bond Night in Bikya Bookstore at 6pm A night especially for the fans of fictional British spy James Bond, the bookstore organises screenings of two of the newer James Bond films starting with 'Casino Royale' followed by 'Quantum of Solace'. 23 Dr. Zaki Hassan Street, off Nasr Street, Nasr City, Cairo Basiony exhibition in several venues Close friend and project curator Shady El-Noshokaty shows installations of Ahmed Basiony's work at several venues across Cairo to commemorate the pioneering artist, who was shot dead on 28 January last year during protests at the onset of the revolution. His new work focuses on the protester in Tahrir Square, using the styles of comics and internet visuals. 8 Champollion Street, Downtown, Cairo Anastasia Terenkova in Manasterly Palace at 8pm The award-winning pianist Anastasia Terenkova will perform several selections by Chopin and others at the International Music Centre Venue at the palace. 1 Malek El Saleh Street, Manial, Cairo ‘Domestic Relations: The Couch' exhibition by Eman Abdou in 6 Contemporary Arts Eman Abdou explores the relationships between citizens and the political environment in which they passively exist in a series of highly ironic paintings, sometimes bright and sometimes monochromatic. Each boasts a different mood and a different story.
