Bruno Metsu has resigned as coach of United Arab Emirates side Al-Wasl on Friday after being diagnosed with stomach cancer.
“Due to his current health condition, Mr Bruno Metsu has requested to be relieved from his duties as head coach of Al Wasl,” the club said on Twitter.
“The Al Wasl Board has accepted Mr Metsu's request & thanked him for all he has given, wishing him a speedy recovery & best wishes.”
Metsu, who replaced Argentine great Diego Maradona as Al-Wasl coach in July, is best known for steering Senegal to a remarkable quarter-final place at the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan.
Egypt winger Mahmoud Abdel-Razek ‘Shikabala' has been playing under his guidance since joining Al-Wasl on a season-long loan from Egyptian giants Zamalek in the close season.
Shikabala has produced some impressive displays since then, scoring three goals for Al-Wasl.
