Doctors call for Sunday protest at Egypt health ministry
After 10 days on strike with no progress in negotiations, Egypt's doctors call for Sunday protest in front of the Ministry of Health
Published in Ahram Online on 18 - 10 - 2012

The doctors' strike committee has called for a protest in front of the Ministry of Health on Sunday to pressure the government to meet their demands.
Doctors have been on a partial strike since 1 October to demand an increase in health spending to 15 per cent of the state budget, wage increases, and better healthcare standards and security at hospitals.
In its statement, the committee said the president and government continually ignore doctors and their demands. The committee expressed the current administration is still adhering to the old regime's practice of leaving problems to simmer until they explode.
Earlier on Thursday, the committee warned the Doctors' Syndicate board not to work against its ongoing strike.
"The board's maneuverings and the yielding tone it adopts in the media indicates its desire to end the strike even though it has widespread support and has not harmed a single patient," in another statement by the committee on Thursday.
On Sunday, doctors stepped up pressure on the Ministry of Health by threatening to resign en masse.
According to the strike committee, at least 15,000 doctors will tender their resignations within days unless their demands are met.
Doctors carried out nationwide strikes in May and September 2011, yet their demands were not achieved.
