AlaanArtspace opened this month in the Saudi capital with Soft Power, an exhibition that reflects the growing movement of Saudi female artists. Soft Power,curated by Sara Raza and featuring artwork by three Saudi artists, Sarah Abu Abdallah, Sarah Mohanna Al-Abdali and Manal Al Dowayan presents an artistic insight into the dynamics of daily life and identity in the conservative Kingdom. In Soft Power,Sarah Abu Abdalla exhibits a set of photos, installations and videos that challenge conventions by placing fully veiled women in different domestic an outfoor settings to examine the politics of social space. Meanwhile, Sarah Al-Abdali's mixed media works tackle marriage rituals, and her project, Four Wives swiftly becomes a social critique. Manal Al Dowayan challenges the cultural taboo of speaking a woman's names in public through an installation entitled Esmi.
