Arabia Offscreen search for ten talented artists
Published in Ahram Online on 15 - 06 - 2011

Between May and August 2011, Offscreen Education will run an international competition in Egypt and other countries to identify ten young artists, photographers, and filmmakers with the potential to inspire their peers
Arabia Offscreen is a projectlooking for the next generation of talented creatives who can inspire others to make a positive difference in the 21st century.
Offscreen have partnered with The Townhouse Gallery in Cairo to deliver a creative workshop based on the theme ‘Saudi Beyond the Stereotype'.
The workshop aims to promote Arabia Offscreen to Cairo's young creative community through the exploration of Saudi Arabia's contemporary art scene. The workshop will be led by one of the leading curators of contemporary Saudi art, Stephen Stapleton, Head Curator of Edge of Arabia.
Participants in the workshop will be invited to contribute to a collaborative collage, gaining inspiration from the work of influential Saudi artists including Ahmed Mater, Abdulnasser Gharem, Sami Al-Turki, and Manal Al-Dowayan. Participants will gain a deeper knowledge of the contemporary Saudi art scene and an understanding of how it relates to current international movements and developments. Participants will also experience what it means to work on a piece of art as a collaborative team.
In December 2011, ten winners op this competition will travel to Saudi Arabia to creatively explore what life is really like there. With unparalleled access to sites, cities and the creative community, the young team will broadcast their daily experiences and communicate their encounters through Offscreen's award winning expedition website.
Their record of the journey, in blogs, films, photographs and artwork will form the basis of an educational resource aiming to shed light on a country which remains stereotyped and undiscovered, in order to promote tolerance and peer-to-peer learning.
The Arabia Offscreen competition is open to 18-24 year olds and the Townhouse workshop will be aimed at those in that age range. However, younger participants who wish to attend the workshop are welcome to do so, but they will be unable to enter the competition.
Workshop will take place onMonday 20 June 2011 between1 pm and 5 pm atRawabet Theatre, Cairo.
