FIFA may suspend Egypt due to 'govt interference': Reports
Recent decision to disqualify Hani Abou-Reida from Egyptian Football Association elections could land Egypt in hot water with world governing body FIFA

World football body FIFA may suspend Egypt due to alleged government interference in football affairs, Egyptian media reports suggested on Tuesday.
FIFA's associations committee has recommended that Egypt be banned for one year or adhere to any decision taken by the EFA's general assembly before next month's scheduled EFA elections.
The warning to suspend Egypt came after FIFA executive committee member Hani Abou-Reida was disqualified from the race to become the EFA's new chairman.
According to a court ruling, Abou-Reida was not eligible to contest the elections because he served as an EFA official for two consecutive terms. The EFA's appeals committee, which disqualified Abou-Reida, said he would not be able to run for president for another four years.
Disqualifying Abou-Reida from the elections, however, apparently violates the EFA's own regulations, which were recently approved by FIFA.
FIFA strictly prohibits any government interference in domestic football affairs.
Abou-Reida, who is expected to file a complaint with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), came in for heavy criticism by Ahly's hardcore supporters – the Ultras Ahlawy – because he had been a member of ousted president Hosni Mubarak's now-defunct National Democratic Party.
The group also accused him of conspiring with the EFA to spare the Masry club any punishment following Egypt's Port Said stadium disaster, which left over 70 Ahly fans dead on 1 February. Masry is the club of Abou-Reida's hometown.
Masry were initially banned by the EFA for two years following the tragedy, but the suspension was swiftly overturned because the EFA declined to send a representative to attend a hearing held by the CAS to look into the case.
Abou-Reida's main challenger for the EFA presidency, Maqassa club chairman Mohamed Abdel-Salam, was also disqualified since he has yet to complete a full term in charge of the Premier League side.
