Powers of new VP to be announced soon: Egypt presidency The powers Mahmoud Mekki will hold as Egypt's first civilian vice president have yet to be announced
Presidential spokesman Yasser Ali has said that a statement will be issued "within days" giving details about the authorities of newly-appointed vice president Mahmoud Mekki. As part of a number ofsweeping reshufflesput in place on Sunday by President Mohamed Morsi within the government and armed forces, Mekki was appointed vice president. Mekki will be the country's first civilian to serve as vice president since the 1952 revolution. In his statement, Ali confirmed that he will perform his duties based at the Presidential Palace in Heliopolis, Cairo. Before being inaugurated as president, Morsi promised to install three vice-presidents which will reflect Egyptian society; a younger man, a Coptic Christian and a woman. Al-Ahram's Arabic-language news website quoted anonymous sources from the presidential office on Sunday as saying that there is a chance more vice-presidents will be appointed, in addition to Mekki. A reformist judge, Mekki is known for fighting for judicial reforms against former president Hosni Mubarak's regime, as part of the Egyptian pro-democracy movement which reached its peak in 2005 and 2006. Mekki, alongside his colleagues, also opposed the rigging of the 2005 parliamentary elections, which were widely held to be fraudulent.
