New minister of sports confirms football will return to Egypt The suspension of Egyptian league matches will be lifted, according to the new sports minister
Egypt's newly appointed Minister of Sports El-Amry Farouk has reiterated that domestic football competitions, which have been suspended since the Port Said deaths in February, will return to life. “The resumption of sports activity is on top of my priorities. President Mohamed Morsi and Prime Minister Hisham Qandil assigned me this task,” the former Ahly board member told Ahly TV. The Egyptian Premier League and the lower divisions were put on hold earlier this year after riots at a Masry-Ahly game on 1 February left 73 dead and hundreds injured. The future of football in Egypt has been in jeopardy since the event, as the interior minister has continued to deny the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) security permission to hold matches, citing security concerns. However, the clubs and the EFA have held several meetings and offered alternative solutions, including playing behind closed doors, to resume domestic competition and bring life back to the stadiums. “The new minister of interior is very keen also to resume the league and help us achieve our goals,” Farouk added. The EFA and the Egyptian clubs have agreed to a provisional start date for the new season on 26 August for the Egyptian Super Cup, followed ten days later by the Premier League.
