On 4 August, Egypt will be in the spotlight of the London 2012 Africa Village, a focus for African culture and achievements
Published in Ahram Online on 28 - 07 - 2012

A first in Olympic history, Africa Village is a venue set aside as a unique meeting point, inviting audiences to discover the cultural, artistic and sporting richness of Africa.
In an official announcement, theAssociation of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA)president, Intendant Lassana Palenfo, stated: “We created Africa Village to offer the public, the National Olympic Committee and African athletes a unique opportunity to fully participate in the Olympic festivities, whatever their means.
"This area will act as an exceptional showcase for our continent in the eyes of the general public, the eight million visitors expected during the Games, and also decision makers from around the world.”
The village consists of two areas: Africa Land and Africa House.
Africa Land aims at presenting the cultural and artistic diversity of Africa to the wide audience, including music, dance and fashion, with performances onstage every day from 1pm to 3pm and from 6pm to 9pm.
Egypt will be in the spotlight Saturday, 4 August, presenting its cultural wealth throughout the day. Shows will include Egyptian dancers and musicians, as well as henna tattoo artists, while Egyptian cuisine will be served to attendees.
Other countries participating in Africa Land events are Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Libya, Nigeria, Cote d'Ivoire, Angola, Cameroon, Central Africa, and Congo and Ethiopia, among others.
Africa House is an official area for ANOCA and the 53 African National Olympic Committees (NOC). The house will host African sports leaders and competing athletes and organise special celebrations for every medal won by an African contestant.
The Africa Village is set in Kensington Gardens, opposite the Royal Albert Hall, London.
