Activists begin removal of third military-built wall in Cairo Military-built wall on Sheikh Rehan Street in downtown Cairo is dismantled by activists who reject attempts to turn area into 'military zone'
Tens of political activists have begun tearing down a wall in downtown Cairo that was erected by the military during clashes at the nearby cabinet building in December 2011, according to El-Badil Online. The wall is on Sheikh Rehan Street next to the Egyptian Scientific Institute, which was set ablaze during the clashes. Activists chanted "Down with the military council" as they removed some of the stones on Thursday evening. Mohamed El-Safty, who helped organise the 'Opening the streets of downtown' event, said it was the third military-built wall to be taken down by activists. The participants, who do not represent any particular political groups, reject the military council's attempts to turn the area around the defence ministry into a military zone, El-Safty said. The attempts to remove the walls had received a positive response from local people who want a return to business as usual, he added. Members of the security forces were standing nearby but had not tried to prevent the wall's removal, El-Safty said. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/48845.aspx
