Egypt's population is expected to reach 82.3 million on Wednesday according to a new report by the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAMPAS).
The report was published by CAPMAS to coincide with the annual World Population Day on 11 July.
In the first census conducted in 1882, the Egyptian population was 6.7 million, and has doubled three times between 1897 and 2006.
According to the report, the Egyptian population grew from 72.8 in 2006 to 76 million in 2009 to 81.4 million at the end of 2011.
The report also revealed that in mid-2011, Cairo was the most populated governorate in Egypt with 8.8 million inhabitants. The least populous governorate was South of Sinai with 159 000 inhabitants.
Life expectancy at birth also increased from 66.5 years in 2006 to 68.6 for males and from 69.1 to 71.4 for females in 2011. Additionally the number of newborns increased from 25.7 for every thousand in 2006 to 30.4 for every thousand in 2011.
