The cabinet headed by Prime Minister Kamal El-Ganzouri is to submit its resignation to the military junta on Monday following the announcement yesterday that Mohamed Mursi won Egypt's presidential election, according to a government source.
The ruling military will not accept the resignation immediately, however, rather it will pass the responsibility to president-elect Mursi who will accept or reject it after he is sworn into office.
The government source also revealed that if Ahmed Shafiq had won the election, the cabinet would have delayed the decision to submit its resignation.
Egypt's president might ask the cabinet to stay on until a new one is formed, the source added.
The Freedom and Justice Party's (FJP) Saad El-Husseini stated on Sunday that Mursi would be sworn into office in parliament, not the High Constitutional Court (HCC). Parliament was recently dissolved by a court order.
Prime Minister El-Ganzouri, who was appointed by the ruling military in December 2011, has asked cabinet members to offer advice to members of the next cabinet.
The Supreme Presidential Electoral Commission announced yesterday that the Muslim Brotherhood's Mohamed Mursi had beaten Mubarak's last premier Ahmed Shafiq to become Egypt's first post-revolution president.
