Egypt determined to end World Cup drought: Elmohamady Despite ongoing domestic political unrest, right wing-back Ahmed Elmohammady is sanguine about Egypt's 2014 World Cup prospects
Right wing-back Ahmed Elmohamady said Egypt are determined to end their longstanding World Cup drought despite ongoing post-revolution political turmoil. February's Port Said tragedy led to the indefinite suspension of all domestic football activity, leaving the Pharaohs struggling to prepare for their World Cup commitments. They are hoping to qualify for the quadrennial tournament for the first time since 1990. They opened their qualifying campaign with a 2-0 home win over Mozambique in the opening Group G match, which was played behind closed doors due to security concerns. Next they will face a tough away game with Guinea, who beat Zimbabwe 1-0 in their first qualifier. ''It's not easy to start a World Cup campaign without your supporters and with all these circumstances. That's why it makes the triumph so precious,'' Elmohamady, who is set to leave English Premier League side Sunderland at the close of the season, said on his official website. ''Now we're at the top of the group and are set to face Guinea next Sunday in a big showdown," he added. "It will be a very competitive game as both teams are looking for their second successive win to become the group leader.'' The 24-year-old, who is reportedly close to a move to Premier League side West Ham, said he was optimistic that Egypt would qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. ''We're on the right track and are determined to make our people happy and achieve the long awaited dream of World Cup qualification," he added.
