Anti-Shafiq protesters face off with Egypt candidate supporters in Heliopolis Shafiq is a no show at rally in the upscale Qorba area in Cairo as his protesters again taunt his backers
Tens of anti-Shafiq protesters faced off with two dozen supporters of the Mubarak-era presidential candidate in Qorba, Heliopolis on Friday afternoon. The presidential candidate's followers had set up a stage in the posh neighbourhood in east Cairo hoping to hear from the former prime minister sometime after 5pm. A small number of policemen separated the two sides. Shafiq campaign organiser told Ahram Online that Shafiq changed plans at the last minute and decided not to attend the rally. The former prime minister had faced protesters who hurled shoes at him on the campaign trail on two separate occasions in the last few weeks. He is set to face the Brotherhood's Mohamed Mursi in a runoff vote on 16/17 June after finishing second the first round of Egypt's first post-Mubarak poll on 24 May.
