UN secretary-general praises Egyptian election
Ban Ki-moon, secretary-general of the United Nations, says the Egyptian elections were an important milestone in the country's history

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has praised Egypt's election, calling it an "important milestone in Egypt's democratic transition."
"These historic elections, in which Egyptians will freely choose their president from amongst numerous candidates, are an important milestone in Egypt's democratic transition," he said in a statement e-mailed to Ahram Online on Sunday.
The secretary-general also praised the authorities for organising the poll and the people for participating. He also commended the fact that there was a strong turn-out of women voters.
The first round of the Egyptians elections took place on 23-24 May. The second round of the poll is slated for 16-17 June, where the Muslim Brotherhood's candidate Mohamed Mursi will face off against Mubarak-era prime minister Ahmed Shafiq.
