Egypt condemned on Sunday the Houthi drone attacks that targeted civilian regions in southern Saudi Arabia. The attacks were intercepted by the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen. Egypt affirmed its support of the measures adopted by Saudi Arabia to maintain its security, stability, and territorial integrity in the face of "terrorist" attacks, a foreign ministry statement read.
The attacks violate international law and constitute a threat to peace and security in the region, the statement continued.
The Saudi coalition said its air defence destroyed on Saturday 17 drones launched towards the kingdom's southern region, including Khamis Mushait and Najran cities.
Egypt has repeatedly expressed its full support of the Saudi Arabian-led coalition against Houthi rebels in Yemen, saying the Iran-backed movement's practices further inflame the situation in Yemen.
In March, Saudi Arabia launched an initiative meant to hold a ceasefire overseen by the UN across the war-torn country, reopening Sanaa International Airport to a number of direct regional and international destinations, and starting UN-sponsored consultations between Yemeni parties to reach a political solution.
The six-year conflict in Yemen started after the Houthis took over the capital Sanaa in 2014.
A Saudi-led coalition intervened in 2015 to restore the internationally recognised Yemeni government.
