Egypt condemned on Saturday the hostile acts carried out by Israeli extremist Jews against Palestinians in the Old City in East Jerusalem, leaving scores of Palestinians wounded. In a statement, the Egyptian foreign ministry voiced concerns over the escalation of violence and provocations committed against the Palestinians since the beginning of the holy fasting month of Ramadan. It also urged the Israeli authorities to bear their responsibility and halt their ongoing violations that target the Arab, Islamic and Christian identity of the Old City in occupied Jerusalem and its sacred sites, as well as attempts to change the historic and legal status of the city. Egypt supports the establishment of an independent Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza with East Jerusalem as its capital as a condition for achieving peace in the Middle East.
