Egypt's Sisi pledges full support to DR Congo in phone call with President Tshisekedi
Published in Ahram Online on 26 - 12 - 2020

Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi affirmed his keenness to providing DR Congo with all forms of support, as he made a phone call on Saturday with his Congolese counterpart, Félix Tshisekedi.

El-Sisi expressed appreciation for the special relations linking the two countries, a statement by the Egyptian presidency read.

He stressed his country's support to DR Congo, with the aim of consolidating the foundations of security and stability in the sisterly country.

Tshisekedi, during the phone call, expressed his country's aspiration to developing relations with Egypt.

He hailed Egypt's sincere and tireless efforts in supporting DR Congo at all levels and in all international and regional forums, with the aim of maintaining security, stability and development within the country, said the statement.

The two leaders discussed regional and continental issues of mutual concern, especially as DR Congo is set to chair the African Union (AU) in 2021, succeeding South Africa, which headed the union in 2020.

They also discussed cooperation and coordination fields between the two countries.

Egypt and DR Congo have shared warm relations with the presidents of the two countries contacting each other frequently to discuss cooperation.

Tshisekedi sent a letter to El-Sisi in November affirming DR Congo's support to Egypt's stance over the disputed Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).
