Addis Ababa is safe, ambassador tells Ahly ahead of Champions League tie Egyptian ambassador to Ethiopia assures Ahly that despite ground assaults launched against Eritrea Addis Ababa is safe ahead of African Champions League match
The Egyptian ambassador to Ethiopia has told Ahly there is no reason to worry about the state of security in the country ahead of a Champions League game against Ethiopian Coffee, the club said on Saturday. Ethiopia carried out a ground assault on Thursday against Eritrean military outposts, accusing their neighbour of training "subversive groups" that attacked Ethiopia. The latest confrontation could escalate tensions between the countries and further strain their relationship. Ahly take on Ethiopian Coffee in the first leg of the Champions League round of 32 on 25 March. “We were given assurances over security in Addis Ababa,” Ahly football director Sayed Abdel-Hafiz told Egyptian radio. “The Egyptian ambassador phoned us and said things are stable in Ethiopia. He told us there was no need to worry about the clashes between the Ethiopian and Eritrean forces.” In a famously heart-wrenching match for Egyptians, Ahly was eliminated from Africa's elite competition by Ethiopian Coffee in 1998 on the away goal rule, following a 2-2 aggregate draw.
