Egypt's MPs call for economic boycott of Turkey
Published in Ahram Online on 04 - 01 - 2020

A number of Egyptian MPs called on Saturday for boycotting Turkish products in the Arab world.

"Arabs should stand united and boycott all Turkish products on sale in Arab markets," said El-Badri Deif, an independent MP and deputy chairman of parliament's economic affairs committee.

He added that the boycott will put further pressure on Turkey and express the Arabs' solidarity with Libya, facing Turkish military intervention.

"Boycotting Turkish products will help disrupt the military plans of (Turkish president) Recep Tayyip Erdogan and stem the tide of the Ottomans in the Arab world," added Deif.

The Congress Party submitted a request to Parliament Speaker Ali Abdel-Aal on Saturday to hold an extraordinary meeting to discuss the necessity of severing economic and trade deals between Egypt and Turkey.

"We also want the extraordinary meeting to urge Arab countries to boycott Turkish products," said a Congress Party statement, adding that "Ahmed Helmi El-Sherif, the party's spokesman in parliament and deputy chairman of the legislative and constitutional affairs committee, asked the parliament speaker on Saturday to hold an extraordinary meeting to call for launching a popular Arab campaign to boycott Turkish products in the Arab world."

The Turkish parliament's approval on 2 January to send military troops to Libya to help the Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated government of Prime Minister Fayez Al-Sarraj in Tripoli has triggered the anger of numerous Egyptian MPs and politicians.

The majority of MPs and political parties lauded the presidential statements condemning Turkey's military intervention in Libya.

The Wafd Party, Egypt's longest-standing opposition party, said on Saturday that there is a consensus among political forces in Egypt that Turkey's military intervention in Libya poses a grave threat to Egypt's national security.

"This intervention aims to turn Libya into a fertile ground for terrorists and to ultimately target Egypt," said the Wafd, urging Egypt's national and independent media to mobilise citizens behind President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi's policies which focus on helping the Libyan National Army, standing up to Turkey's military intervention and taking the measures necessary to protect Egypt's national security.
