Turkish giants Besiktas announced on Saturday the signing of Egypt's midfielder Mohamed Elneny on loan for a season from English Premier League club Arsenal. "We agreed with Arsenal to sign Elneny for one season on loan with an option to make the deal a permanent one," read a statement on the official website of the Turkish club. "We would like to welcome Mohamed Elneny to the Besiktas family, who we believe will provide important services to our Besiktas," the statement added. On Friday, Besiktas said they had reached an agreement with Arsenal to sign Elneny, pending the Egyptian international's passing of medical examination upon his arrival in Turkey later on the day. "I am very excited to be joining Turkish giants Besiktas and I look forward to achieving our targets in the Süper Lig and Europe," the former Basel FC player Elneny tweeted on Saturday. "To my dear Arsenal fans and teammates, I wish you all the success in the season and be sure that i will be following the team's progress from Istanbul," he added. The 27-year-old midfielder joined the English Premier League team in January 2016 from Switzerland's FC Basel. Arsenal's Spanish coach Unai Emery revealed earlier this month that Elneny and German defender Shkodran Mustafi were not in his plans for the new season. "In the last three and a half years Elneny has played nearly 100 matches with Arsenal, in addition to 75 games with his national team. After Gary Medel left the team, we were searching for an experienced midfielder," Besiktas football director Ali Naibi said on Friday. "I think we've made a significant boost to this area by including Elneny. We are sure that he will make a very important contribution to us," he added. During the current transfer market, Elneny has been sought by other Turkish clubs like Fenerbahce and Galatasaray, and was also linked with a move to French side Bordeaux. Besiktas ended the Turkish league last season at the third place with 65 points, four behind champions Galatasaray SK.
