Egyptian historianSherif Younis'new book begins with the premise that Egypt's July 1952 revolution was the work of a group of patriotic army officers angry with the political status quo who decided to intervene politically for the common good of the Egyptian people.
Yet the book, subtitled “A Critical History of Nasserite Ideology,” goes on to challenge this assumption, asserting that the situation at the time was considerably more complicated that this and raising new questions about the officers who led the coup and eventually established Egypt's modern, post-1952 regime.
Sherif Younis is a history professor at Helwan University. He has authored several books, includingSayed Kotb wa Alosolya Al-Islamiya(Sayed Kotb and Islamic Fundamentalism) and Al-Zahf Al-Moqaddas: Mozaharat Al-Tanahy wa Ebadat Abdennaser(The Sacred March: The Step Down Protests and the Worshipping of Abdel Naser).
