Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi and Sunderland defender Nedum Onuoha held talks with Nigeria coach Samson Siasia and agreed to launch their international careers with the Super Eagles, but further details were still to be discussed. According to Nigerian site “kickoffnigeria”, Siasia contacted both players by telephone and is set to meet them later this month when he travels to Europe. Ameobi, 29, and Onuoha, 24, are Nigeria-born but have spent most of their lives in the UK, and have represented England youth teams internationally. However, under the FIFA rulings, they could choose to play for their country of birth at the senior level. Siasia, who was named Nigeria coach last November, is trying to rebuild the Super Eagles' squad after their string of poor performances over the past few years. He is scouting for the Nigerian-born players in Europe, trying to convince them to play for their mother country. He has also held talks with some key players like skipper Joseph Yobo.
