Spain mulls extradition of tycoon Hussein Salem's daughter Madrid considers handing daughter of detained business magnate over to Egypt; Judge expects Salem's extradition within 3 months
Spanish authorities will reportedly look into an Egyptian request to hand business tycoon Hussein Salem's daughter, Magda Salem, over to Egyptian authorities on 16 January. The Spanish government is expected to decide the issue within three days. According to Judge Essam El-Gohary, head of Egypt's Illicit Gains Authority, which is responsible for recovering stolen public money, Madrid will also consider a longstanding Egyptian request to hand over Hussein Salem himself within the next three months. El-Gohary has said that his office would despatch three legal specialists – Judge Ahmed Saad, Judge Aser Harb and Judge Ahmed Ali – to attend a 16 January court session in Spain held to decide whether to extradite Magda Salem to Egypt. El-Gohary's office has also hired a Spanish legal firm to follow up on the case. A business magnate who enjoyed close ties with the ousted Mubarak regime, Salem – currently being held by Spanish authorities – faces multiple charges of corruption and money laundering in both countries. Salem's son and daughter, who were arrested in Spain last summer, have also both been accused of laundering some 2 billion euros. Salem, who fled Egypt on 3 February at the height of last year's revolution, was arrested in his villa in Majorca, Spain in June of last year. Spanish lawyer Matthew Fortunato, who is currently working the case on a volunteer basis in coordination with Spain's Egyptian community, filed a request in September with Spain's National Court to extradite the detained businessman to Egypt. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/31378.aspx
