The prosecution investigating the violence around the Egyptian Cabinet offices in Cairo which erupted on 16 December has summoned engineer Mamdouh Hamza and presidential hopeful Ayman Nour for questioning on Tuesday. The summons comes after their names were mentioned during investigations as allegedly responsible for inciting the clashes and burning of public buildings, including the historic Scientific Institute.
The prosecution has also ordered the 30-day detention of another suspect accused of involvement in the clashes. The suspect is accused of attempting to kill security personnel and creating a state of chaos.
Minister of Justice Judge Adel Abd El-Hamid had appointed two judges, Wagdy Abd El-Neim and Wagih El-Shaer, to investigate the case.
Security forces, including army soldiers and officers, engaged in violent clashes with protesters around the Cabinet building and nearby Tahrir Square after the military dispersed the sit-in protesting the newly-appointed government. During the five days of clashes, 16 protesters were killed and 973 injured.
