Egypt on Thursday named new governors for 22 of the country's 27 governorates, retaining only five in their posts. The new governors took their oath of office in front of President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi at the presidential palace in Cairo. Major General Khaled Abdel-Aal Abdel-Hafez, who was Cairo's security chief until his retirement last month, was appointed as the capital's governor. Manal Mikhail was appointed governor of Damietta, becoming the second Egyptian woman and first Coptic woman ever to be appointed to a gubernatorial position in Egypt. Five women were also appointed in the positions of deputy governor, two more than those appointed in the last governors' reshuffle. Major General Ahmed Rashed Moustafa was named the governor of Giza. He served as the head of the interior ministry's administrative affairs authority and was the interior minister's advisor for security. Abdel-Aziz Qonsowa, who is the deputy head of the University of Alexandria, was named the governor of Alexandria, while Ahmed El-Ansary, the head of the country's ambulance authority, was named governor of the southern governorate of Sohag. Mohamed Abdel-Fadeil Shousha was renamed governor of North Sinai. Shousha held the post before the 2011 uprising from 2008 until early 2010 and also briefly served after that as governor of South Sinai. The previous governor reshuffle in Egypt took place in February 2017 when five new governors were appointed, including for the governorates of Alexandria and Qalyoubiya.
