'Queen of Soul' Aretha Franklin dies at age 76

The Queen of Soul music Aretha Franklin (1942 - 2018) has died at 76, according to a family statement.

Franklin died at 9:50 am at her home in Detroit surrounded by family and friends, according to a statement on behalf of Franklin's family from her longtime publicist Gwendolyn Quinn.

Her death comes three days after a source close to Franklin told CNN's Don Lemon that the singer was in hospice care.

The legendary singer was diagnosed with cancer in 2010 and announced last year she was retiring from music.

Franklin was known for hits like Respect, Think, Lean on Me, and Angel.

She had more than 20 US number one Billboard hits over a career spanning seven decades.

Franklin gave her final performance last November at a gala in New York held in support of the Elton John AIDS Foundation.
