Published in Ahram Online on 23 - 07 - 2018

Egypt's National Archive has published a collection of original documents from the 23 July revolution, which saw the overthrow of the monarchy and the establishment of an Egyptian republic in 1952.
The documents include the original letter, dated 26 July, 1952, sent by the Free Officers Movement to King Farouk I. The letter demands that he abdicate his throne to his son, Prince Ahmed Fouad II, who was an infant at that time, and never ruled the country.
King Farouk I ruled Egypt from 28 April, 1936 until 26 July, 1952. He was born in 1920 and died the age of 45 in Capri, Italy, on 18 March, 1965.
The collection of documents also includes the abdication letter of King Farouk I, dated 26 July, 1952, marked with the king's seal and issued from Ras El-Tin palace in Alexandria.
It also includes a royal decree announcing Prince Ahmed Fouad II as King of Egypt and Sudan.
The second group of documents includes the declaration of the constitution from the commander of the Egyptian armed forces and the leader of the army's revolution, Mohamed Naguib, dated 10 February, 1953. Naguib later became Egypt's first president, serving in office from June 18, 1953 until November 14, 1954.
The collection also records the turn of Egypt's political scene in a document dated 17 April, 1954, in which Mohamed Naguib resigns and Gamal Abdel Nasser acceded to the presidential office. The documents also include a list of Nasser's full cabinet.
