Holders Wydad held, Mazembe and Etoile Sahel win in African Champions League
Published in Ahram Online on 17 - 07 - 2018

African heavyweights TP Mazembe, Etoile Sportive du Sahel and Wydad de Casablanca claimed favourable results in the Champions League group stage games on Tuesday.
Defending Champions Wydad of Morocco secured a 1-1draw against Horoya in Conakry. Wydad winger Ismail El-Hadad opened the scoring in the 26th minute but Ocansey Mandela equalised three minutes later as both sides shared honours.
Wydad keep their place on top of Group C with five points while Horoya, who also have five points, remained second due to an inferior goal difference.
In the same group, 2016 African champions Sundowns slumped to a 1-0 defeat by Togo Port de Lomé, who claimed their first win in the group stage.
Sundowns lie at the bottom with two points from three games.
Elsewhere, Congolese giants TP Mazembe claimed a 1-0 win over Mouloudia Club d'Alger in Lubumbash, thanks to a late goal from Meschac Elia who netted with two minutes remaining to put his side on the verge of sealing qualification for the knockout phase.
The five-time African Champions are on top of Group B with maximum nine points, five ahead of second-placed Mouloudia.
Earlier in the day, Tunisian giants Etoile du Sahel climbed to the Group D summit after thrashing Mbabane Swallows of Swaziland 3-0 away. Etoile have seven points, three clear of second-placed Mbabane Swallows.
Midfielder Karim Aoudhi opened the scoring after 14 minutes, Maher Hannachi doubled the lead 20 minutes later and veteran winger Amin Chermiti completed the rout in the 71st minute.
In the same group, Zambia's ZESCO United were held to goalless home draw by Angola's Primeiro de Agosto. Both sides have two points from three games and their hopes to secure one of the qualifying tickets of the group seem very slim.
