Mbappe's record
Kylian Mbappe became France's youngest World Cup goalscorer as he scored Les Bleurs goal against Peru 1-0 on Thursday to reach the last 16 and condemn the South Americans to an early exit. Paris Saint-Germain forward Mbappe - aged 19 years and 183 days - beat the record of David Trezeguet who scored against Saudi Arabia in 1998 at the age of 20 years and 246 days.

VAR takes centre stage … again
Australia grabbed a precious point against Denmark (1-1) to keep their hopes alive in the World Cup. Referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz had failed to spot that Mathew Leckie's header had struck the arm of Yussuf Poulsen, but after being alerted to the incident by the VAR, he pointed to the spot. Jedinak scored to cancel's Eriksen's early goal.

Royal boost
Japan's Princess Takamado met with the national team at their World Cup base in Kazan on Thursday ahead of their second Group H clash against Senegal. The princess, who is the first member of Japan's royal family to visit Russia since 1916, watched the Samurai Blue beat Colombia in their World Cup opener and will attend Sunday's match against Senegal in Ekaterinburg.

Messi fails to shine
Messi endured a frustrating night, failing to put in the sort of scintillating performances we've come to expect of him as Argentina slumped to a 3-0 victory to Croatia.
