Although Omar Gaber has recently suffered a dip in form, his versatility could come in handy for Egypt at the World Cup. The Los Angeles FC midfielder can play in a variety of positions, including as a right and left-back. He can also operate as a central midfielder, with his typical energetic runs giving the team several options. Gaber has been a regular member of Egypt's squad since he made his international debut in September 2011, going on to earn 21 international caps. He used to play regularly under coach Hector Cuper on the right flank before losing his place in the summer of 2016 following some excellent displays from veteran fullback Ahmed Fathi. Gaber's form was heavily affected by his lack of playing time at his former club Basel. He then joined Los Angeles in November last year. He did not look fully fit during Egypt's pre-World Cup matches but remains a good option on the bench. The 25-year-old was a member of the Egypt side that reached the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations final, although he only played 14 minutes in the semi final win over Burkina Faso. "[World Cup qualification] is a special for this generation; they will remember us after we retire," Gaber said. "I'm proud that I will represent my country at the World Cup. It's a big honour. I'm so happy and excited. (For more sports news and updates, follow Ahram Online Sports on Twitter at @AO_Sports and on Facebook at AhramOnlineSports.)
