Preview: Barca can claim title this weekend, but rivals Deportivo need the points too
Published in Ahram Online on 27 - 04 - 2018

Barcelona can clinch the 2017/18 LaLiga title in Sunday's evening's crunch game at Deportivo La Coruna - but opponents Depor need the win themselves to keep alive hopes of avoiding relegation.
Barca are currently 11 points clear of second placed Atletico Madrid at the top of the LaLiga table - with the blaugrana side having five games left to play, and Atletico only four.
Third placed Real Madrid sit 15 points behind the leaders - still with a mathematical chance of retaining the title should they win all their remaining games, including May 6's Clasico at the Camp Nou.
Assuming Madrid [at home to Leganes on Saturday afternoon] or Atletico [away at Alaves earlier on Sunday] do not both slip up first, a draw at Riazor will secure a 25th LaLiga trophy for the Camp Nou outfit. A point would also seal the domestic double for Ernesto Valverde's team, just eight days after last Saturday's 5-0 Copa del Rey final win over Sevilla.
Barca beat Deportivo 4-0 in December's reverse fixture, but the Galicians will surely be up for the return as they sit 18th in the table, nine points behind 17th placed Levante.
Levante host Sevilla on Friday evening - meaning Clarence Seedorf's men will know by the time they kick off whether they need a victory to avoid confirmation of relegation down to LaLiga 123.
The LaLiga weekend also brings some interesting contests in the race to qualify for European football next season. Fourth placed Valencia can join Barca, Real and Atletico in next year's Champions League draw if they defeat Eibar at Mestalla on Sunday afternoon.
Fifth placed Real Betis are at home to already relegated Andalusian neighbours Malaga, and a fourth straight home win would keep Quique Setien's side on course for the first Europa League qualification spot.
Sixth placed Villarreal have a similar goal in mind as they host Celta Vigo on Saturday evening, but Celta travel knowing a victory would push them back into contention for the all-important seventh position currently held by Sevilla.
Getafe and Girona are also in the mix - so the result of their meeting at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez at Sunday lunchtime looks a 'must win' for both sides.
The LaLiga weekend also brings a Basque derby at Anoeta on Saturday afternoon, with Real Sociedad and Athletic Club looking for a big result towards the end of up and down campaigns.
Espanyol hosting already relegated Las Palmas will also give coaches David Gallego and Paco Jemez a chance to try out some new things with recent pressures off now.
