New PM seeks to ingratiate himself with Egypt's youth Kamal El-Ganzouri speaks about his achievements under Mubarak, says he was the only minister to stand up against corruption despite presidential disapproval
New Prime Minister Kamal El-Ganzouri has defended his record as a Mubarak-era prime minister by claiming he was the only member of the old regime to stand up against corruption and back projects that benefited the people despite presidential disapproval. Speaking at a televised press conference on Friday, Ganzouri mentioned various projects initiated during his term of office that he believed benefited the nation, such as refunding peasants who had bought ineffective pesticides and refunding the taxes of Egyptians living abroad after a court deemed them unconstitutional. He said he wanted to explain his past record following attacks on him by a “small minority” of opponents. He added that he was the only one of 120 Mubarak-era ministers who hadn't benefit financially from his time in office. He went on to say the state was capable of dispersing the ongoing sit-in in front of the cabinet office, which is protesting his appointment as prime minister, but he opposed such measures “not as an official but as a human being.” The security situation is still fragile, he added, therefore it is not the right time to protest and call for the government's downfall, and these matters needed to be handled in the right way. The budget deficit is being discussed by the cabinet because an increased deficit means price inflation, he concluded. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/28904.aspx
