Published in Ahram Online on 04 - 12 - 2011

Darb 1718 cultural centre presents their Cinema El Fourn October film series:
Programme:
Monday 5 December
Tintin and I (2003) - Denmark/ France/ Belgium/ Switzerland, Director: Anders Hogsbro Ostergaard
Tintin and I examines one of the most iconic comic characters of all time, and the man who created him. Through a mix of live-action, animation, and archival footage, and featuring revealing interviews with artist Georges Remi – better known to his legion of fans as Herge – Tintin and I goes into detail about the life of a talented and private man, and how the success of his comic-book creation affected it.
Wednesday 7 December
A Town Called Panic (2010) – Belgium, Directors: Stéphane Aubier and Vincent Patar
Hilarious and delightfully wacky, the stop-motion extravaganza A Town Called Panic has endless charms and raucous laughs for children and adults alike. Based on the Belgian cult TV series, Panic stars three plastic toys named Cowboy, Indian and Horse who share a rambling house in a rural town that never fails to attract the craziest happenings.
Cowboy and Indian's plan to surprise their pal Horse with a homemade barbeque pit goes awry when the 50 million bricks they accidentally ordered online show up on their doorstep.
Monday 12 December
Yi Yi (2001) – Taiwan, Director: Edward Yang
A wedding and a grandmother's illness reveal fault lines in the lives of one Taipei family in Edward Yang's extraordinary film. Yi Yi is built from deceptively simple elements that together create a complex, warm, and utterly convincing portrait of family life. NJ Jian is a businessman facing bankruptcy, but he has to juggle his financial problems with family strife when his mother-in-law falls into a coma. NJ's wife, Min-Min, brings her mother home, and each family member including daughter Ting-Ting and her delightful little brother Yang-Yang – spends hours talking to the old lady. These conversations become confessionals and the characters gradually re-evaluate their relationships.
Wednesday 14 December
The Royal Tenenbaums (2001) – USA, Director: Wes Anderson
A comedic masterwork that ripples with inventive, richly emotional substance. Because of the all-star cast, hilarious dialogue, and oddball characters existing in their own, wholly original universe, it's easy to miss the depth and complexity of Anderson's brand of comedy. Here, it revolves around Royal Tenenbaum, the errant patriarch of a dysfunctional family of geniuses, including precocious playwright Margot, boyish financier and grieving widower Chas, and has-been tennis pro Richie.
Monday 19 December
Synecdoche, New York (2008) – USA, Director: Charlie Kaufman
An insanely ambitious, dazzling, maddening movie, 'Synecdoche, NewYork' is the directorial debut of Charlie Kaufman, the inspired screenwriter of twisty, mind-bending movies like 'Being John Malkovich', 'Adaptation', and 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind'. Broadly summarised, it's about a director named Caden Cotard (Philip SeymourHoffman) who, after his wife leaves him, sets out to create a theatre production that will mirror all of life in New York City by literally recreating the city inside of a gigantic warehouse – including versions of his lover, his new wife, and himself, who become so entrenched in his life that eventually there must also be doubles of these doubles... which only describes a fragment of the intertwining storylines.
Wednesday 21 December
American Radical: The Trials of Norman Finkelstein (2009) – USA, Director: David Ridgen and Nicolas Rossier
American Radical is the insightful and enraging documentary that follows Finkelstein around the world as he attempts to negotiate a voice among his impassioned critics and supporters. Uncompromising even in the face of his recent denial of tenure at DePaul University, Finkelstein is revealed as a complex and supremely lonely figure whose self-destructive nature often undermines his academic credibility.
All films are subtitled in English
