Eto'o charged with inciting boycott of Algeria friendly
Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) accuses national team captain of plotting against the sport's governing bodies
Published in Ahram Online on 01 - 12 - 2011

The FECAFOOT has released a document, made available to Chinese news agency Xinhua, charging Samuel Eto'o of inciting his teammates to boycott Algeria's 15 November friendly game because of the non-payment of bonuses following the team's triumph in the LG Cup held in Morocco in early November.
“Some points suggest that the botch-up of the Algeria-Cameroon international friendly was premeditated and that the Indomitable Lions captain was manipulated to destabilize the federation and the ministry of sports,” the document reads.
The accusations also included Jean Makoun Idriss Kameni and Vice-captain Enoh Tarkang Eyong for their role in leading the strike.
“The refusal to accept the bonuses, which the sports ministry later made available in Marrakech, and the determination to persist in a position with extremely serious consequences, and the absence of Eto'o, who left for Barcelona, on permission, and his firm instructions on telephone to his team-mates, resulted in the eventual grave situation,” the document added.
The affair has made a big splash, and the Cameroon president has asked for an explanation from the ministry of sports and FECAFOOT as the Algerians expressed fury to the point that they refused to deliver visas to Cameroonian officials who wanted to travel to Algeria to present their excuses.
The Algerian FA has filed a complaint with FIFA against FECAFOOT claiming damages up to $1million.
“Eto'o confided to some officials his resentment towards the minister of sports and the president of FECAFOOT for contacting the prime minister demanding to change the team's captaincy.
“The FECAFOOT official offered to transfer the bonuses to Eto'o's account so he could distribute the money to his colleagues in order to safeguard the FA's reputation with their Algerian counterpart. The captain accepted, then retracted, claiming some fiscal issues,” the statement concluded.
Eto'o is expected to make a statement in the next few days to defend himself from the charges and fire back at Cameroonian officials.
