Former Egypt defender Hany Ramzy fired as Ittihad of Alexandria coach
Published in Ahram Online on 21 - 10 - 2017

Former Egypt defender Hany Ramzy has been fired as coach of Ittihad of Alexandria following Thursday's 1-1 league draw against El-Entag El-Harby, the coastal club announced on Saturday, adding that French tactician Jean-Michel Cavalli will be the club's new coach.
"The club's board decided to fire the technical staff headed by Ramzy after the poor results since the season's start," Ittihad said in a statement via its official website.
"Former Algeria coach Jean-Michel Cavalli will be the new coach after signing a two-year contract with the club," the statement added.
After departing his job as coach of Egypt's locally-based football team, Ramzy, who is widely considered one of Egypt's best-ever defenders, took charge of Ittihad at the season start.
The 48-year-old coach had little luck, however, as Ittihad currently lie 10th on the Egyptian league table with only 7 points from six matches.
Ramzy, who previously played for Werder Bremen and Kaiserslautern in a long successful playing career in Germany, has had little success since becoming a coach following his retirement in 2005.
The former Ahly stopper failed to make a notable impact in two spells with Egyptian Premier League side ENPPI and he also had short tenures in charge of Wadi Degla and Belgian club Lierse.
Ramzy's best achievement was guiding Egypt's U-23 to a quarter-final place at the 2012 London Olympic Games, where they were given a reality check after slumping to a 3-0 defeat by Japan at Manchester United's Old Trafford.
Ramzy made 123 international appearances and was part of the last Egyptian team to make a World Cup appearance in 1990 in Italy. He also captained the Pharaohs team that won the 1998 African Cup of Nations in Burkina Faso.
The 58-year-old Cavalli previously guided notable clubs like France's Lille OSC, Morocco's Wydad Casablanca, Sudan's Al-Hilal, Algeria's USM Alger and finally MC Oran of Algeria.
He is the third manager to depart this season after Khaled El-Kammash and Moemen Soliman both left Ragaa and Smouha respectively.
